Top Tips To Maintain Wooden Flooring

Wooden flooring can lend your home a classic sophistication, as well as being a healthier alternative to carpets for those of us who suffer from allergies. They are also very durable, but they do need some routine maintenance to keep them in good condition. Here are some tips to get the most life out of your flooring.

Have a weekly cleaning routine

Obviously, any large spills should be mopped up straight away to stop the liquid from seeping into the deeper layers of the wood. While the flooring should have some form of protective coating, such as polyurethane, oils, or varnish, liquid that is not cleaned up quickly will still eventually soak through the barrier and may lead to damp and rot.

On a weekly basis, vacuum up dust, dirt, and hairs with the soft floor brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner, to avoid scratching the floor. Next, mop the floor with a well-wrung out mop and hot water. If your floor is oiled, as older wooden floors may be, avoid using any form of detergent, as this will eventually strip the protective coating from the floor.

Newer wooden floors tend to be finished with polyurethane, which may be compatible with some types of cleaner. However, check the manufacturers’ instructions carefully, and carry out a patch test on a small area first. Remember never to use steam cleaners or any harsh abrasive chemicals on your floor.

Protect the floor from scratches

Have a policy of removing outdoor shoes before walking on the floor, especially high heels. Lift up furniture and heavy objects and carry them, rather than dragging them across the floor. Protect areas of high traffic with rugs or pads.

Over time, it is inevitable that a wooden floor will pick up some scratches and dents, no matter how carefully you look after it. To give a tired looking floor a new lease of life, you could consider having it professionally sanded and refinished by a flooring repair specialist.
