The first tip for success is to make sure that you budget appropriately, remembering that renovations can often be more costly than anticipated, so you’d be wise to include a contingency fund and add a little extra to your budget, just in case.

It’s also important to think about how you intend to use each space before you make any permanent changes. If you’re having an extension built, this is especially useful, as it will inform all sorts of other decisions, such as where to put doors and windows, as well as electric points.

And if you’re doing any DIY, have ‘measure twice, cut once’ as your mantra as you work. Taking the time to make sure you’ve properly measured will save you both time and money, and reduce the amount of waste you create.

Where DIY is concerned, it can also be useful to be honest with yourself about your skills and experience, and you should only ever tackle jobs that you know you can complete competently and safely. Some jobs may well be best left to professional contractors and this can be budgeted for at the beginning of the project.
