Quite a few people give up on perfectly usable objects far too easily.
More often than you would think you can very easily and simply fix or clean a household item to make it as good as new with only basic tools and skills.
However, when it comes to the entrance of your house, knowing when a door repair is best or whether it is time to replace it is often trickier than you may expect.
Some doors that look a mess just need buffing, recoating or resealing, whilst some that look perfectly fine from the outside may be inherently compromised.
Here are some telltale signs of when you should repair or replace your door.
Is It Difficult To Lock?
Your front door is, above all other purposes, part of your security system, and it needs to easily close and lock to fulfil this purpose.
If you consistently struggle with the lock, have to lift the door handle or otherwise fumble with the keys, it could be a sign that there is a structural issue with your door’s hinges, which would require more substantial repairs or a replacement.
Is There Rust, Cracks Or Breaks?
Surface scratches, small dents and superficial weathering are signs that your door has taken a beating but is still structurally sound.
However, if you see cracks in the door’s panels or along its edges, it could be a sign of water damage or internal damage to the door. As well as this, if you see rust on the lock or hinges, that is a sign the door is compromised and could be broken easily.
Is There Moisture Between The Glass?
Doors with a glass panel have double glazing, where two glass panes are separated with a seal in the middle. Once this seal breaks, moisture, mould and mildew can enter between the panes.
This is one of the biggest signs that your door has reached its replacement date.
